Importance of bedtime routine and how to create one for kids

Bedtime routines are a set of regular, repetitive tasks performed every night before going to sleep. By getting your kid calm and wind down, bedtime routines help in getting them ready for bed. A scheduled routine teaches a sense of security in your youngster and educates them on how to do it independently.

Children who follow bedtime routines are more likely to go to sleep faster, stay asleep better, and wake up less frequently during the night. Bedtime routines help your toddler develop self-care, working on memory, attention, and other cognitive abilities in addition to improving their sleep. Additionally, they encourage parent-child relationships and may lessen stress and enhance mood and behaviour.

Long-term, these advantages result in improved academic performance, social skills, and readiness for school. Contrarily, those who do not follow a bedtime routine as children are more likely to experience sleep issues and gain weight as teenagers.

Setting a bedtime routine right from the beginning with your baby makes it easier to keep up healthy habits as your child grows.

Creating a bedtime routine for your kids

Kids’ bedtime routines typically include three to four tasks, such as eating a snack, brushing their teeth, wearing pajamas, and reading a book. Always complete these in the same order. Dimming the lights and turning off the screens in the hours before night will help the process be even more successful. Regular bedtime routines that have been proven to improve sleep quality include:

  • Healthy snack or a glass of milk
  • Diaper change or bath
  • Brushing teeth and going to the bathroom
  • Reading a book
  • Singing a song together or a lullaby
  • Massaging, and cuddling
  • Talking about their day

The final step of the bedtime routine should be a goodnight kiss and lights-out. You should leave the room while your child is sleepy but not asleep yet. This way they learn to fall asleep on their own, and they won’t panic if they wake up in the middle of the night and find you gone.  Set a consistent bedtime that allows your child to get the required number of hours of sleep for their age.
