How to avoid junk food in children

To help your kids develop a positive relationship with food, it’s essential to teach them about healthy eating. Children who consume excessive amounts of unhealthy foods are more likely to develop problems like obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and cancer.  With all the ads for junk food on television and the prevalence of these foods, it can be hard to keep your child eating healthily. However, there are strategies you can use to support you in achieving this goal.

Keep healthy snacks handy

Give your kid mainly healthy snacks, including fruits and vegetables or cheese and whole-grain crackers. Keep healthy snacks handy for your kids when they get hungry by setting them on low shelves in the refrigerator or cupboards. Since kids are more likely to eat items that are visible, have a bowl of fruit out for them to help themselves.

Avoid keeping junk food at home

Keep some food out of the house if you don’t want your child to eat it. because your child can’t eat foods that aren’t there.  When you are away from home, treat yourself occasionally. This will limit how much junk food your child can eat.

Don’t bargain

Avoid using junk food as a bargaining tool. In order to encourage children to consume healthier foods, avoid rewarding them with junk food or using it as a bribe. Doing so will only make junk food more tempting and healthier foods less so, children should have the freedom to decide how much to eat because forcing them to finish their plates can result in overeating later in life.

Don’t ban junk food

Even though you probably don’t want your child to eat a lot of junk food, you shouldn’t fully ban it. This only serves to boost the attraction of these foods and the chance that your child will binge eat if the child has the chance to eat them at a friend’s house, at a birthday celebration, or at school. Teach moderation and allow your kids to occasionally eat small amounts of these foods, perhaps at a friend’s house or a birthday party but not at home.
